London Mayor Sadiq Khan has stated that he believes US President Donald Trump repeatedly attacks the British capital due to feeling jealous of London's international success. Khan affirmed that London is 'incredibly successful' and that these successes are the reason for Trump's continuous attacks on the city. The Mayor of London reignited the war of words with the American president days ago, emphasizing that London is safer than any other American city. Khan claimed that Trump only attacks the British capital because he feels the United States lacks global cities that can compete with London on an international level. Khan, who has been Mayor of London since 2016, pointed out that some Members of Parliament who criticize the capital suffer from a lack of national feeling, accusing them of criticizing London for its 'excessive success'. He added that London is a diverse, progressive, liberal, and multicultural city, incredibly successful, and that criticizing MPs reflects their rejection of these values. This escalation comes as part of the long-running feud between the London mayor from the British Labour Party and Trump, who previously described Khan as a 'terrible, evil, and odious mayor'. Khan asked in an interview with the 'Financial Times' whether Trump is 'obsessed' with talking about London after these repeated criticisms. Trump had previously claimed that parts of London have become no-go zones for police. Khan said that London is currently facing a 'bitter cultural war', including an increase in racism, but he confirmed that part of the attacks on the city stem from Trump's feeling of jealousy due to the absence of American cities capable of competing with London globally. He clarified that the murder rate in London is much lower compared to any US state, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, pointing out that this comparison supports the idea that London is a safe and successful city. Khan mentioned that Trump's downplaying of London might be understandable to him, but he expressed his disappointment that British MPs are adopting policies or stances that diminish the value of the city, as he also warned British Prime Minister Keir Starmer against adopting tax policies that might deter the rich, indicating the importance of protecting London's success and maintaining its status as a global city.
